Racing & Training Events, Winter 2015 to 2016.

Post by MalcolmB »

Racing and Training events over winter 2015 and spring 2016.

Local Winter Series Events:

Wey Kayak Club. (http://www.weykayak.co.uk)
Guildford Waterside Centre, Riverside, Bellfields, Guildford, Surrey. GU1 1LW.

Wey Kayak Club organize a series of 5 races over winter.

Hare & Hounds Series.
The Hare and Hounds is a series of races run by Wey Kayak Club over the winter with anyone welcome to take part in any type of kayak or canoe. It is based on a time trial format with the slowest paddlers starting first and faster ones later with the aim of everybody finishing at the same time. This makes for a very exciting event in which no one is left behind on the water. A paddler’s finishing time for one race becomes their start time for the next.
The course is 6 miles (10 km) up and down the river Wey from the clubhouse, with two portages in Guildford town centre and turning in front of St Catherine’s lock. All entrants are expected to complete the course in under 90 minutes – an average paddler takes about 60 minutes, while the course record stands at under 40 minutes!
Dash Hounds
The Dash Hound series runs in parallel with the Hare and Hounds but starts earlier than the Hare & Hounds. The Dash Hounds are a shorter 5km course with no portages specifically aimed at U14’s who are not quite up to the full Hare and Hounds course.

Essex winter series. (http://flatwaterracing.weebly.com)

The Winter Series is a series of six marathon canoe races held between November and March on the Chelmer, Lea, Stort, Cam and Roding. It is a great introduction to the sport for newcomers as there are several classes aimed at the new paddler. It also has a lot to offer the experienced racer with a number of distance events. The races are often attended by some of the best paddlers in the region.

The classes are organised by age, sex and boat type over three different distances. An outline of the classes and distances can be seen below.
Group 1 – Distance between 7 – 9 miles.
Group 2 – Distance approx. 5 miles.
Group 3 – Distance between 3 – 4 miles.
Most kayaks or canoes welcome.

The above two events are the largest attended but other clubs such as The Sharks (http://www.thesharks.org.uk ) also organise series races over winter. (Dates have not yet been released but are normally on a Saturday).
