Yalding to East Lock and back to Yalding

This trip is organised jointly by Bewl CC and Meridian CC, and will be led by Hannah Fraser and Kathryn Moody. Full contact details are given at the end of this note.

Join us for this all-day touring trip starting and finishing at Yalding where there are good facilities. (parking, toilets, canoe launch site ,cafe and pub).
The first half of the day is all up-stream against the flow, as far as East lock, and then after a break,we will paddle downstream back to Yalding.
This is a touring trip and will help you develop your touring skills, stamina and strength. There will be no opportunities for white water play, or to use chutes, slides or canoe passes. Instead there are 4 places where you have to "Portage", ie get off the water, transfer your boat past the lock, and then get back on the water. This can be tiring if you are not used to it.
There will be an early start and we will leave on time.
This part of the Medway is very quiet and remote, with wildlife and attractive scenery
Distance approx. 10 miles
Time approx. 6 hours including stops
Suitable for: Adults with full 1* qualification, and experience of 4 or more all-day river trips, and good paddling strength and stamina.
NOT suitable for: Juniors, Adult beginners, Dogs
Boats: Please bring Touring-type Kayaks that travel easily in a straight line. They must have room for all your food and kit, and room for you to stretch your legs in or access your food, so we can take a break/ eat some food while still in the boat on the water.
Please do NOT bring a sit on top, paddleboard, playboat or inflatable. If you are thinking of coming in an open canoe then please be aware that we will be paddling a long way and at a reasonable pace. If you are planning on using an open please let Hannah know.
Licences: You need a licence to use a boat on the non-tidal River Medway. This is your personal responsibility. I) If you are a BCU member bring your card with you and be prepared to show it. This will cover you for any boat you are in. 2) If you are a club member in a club boat you will probably be covered by your Club's licence. Check with your club. 3) if neither of the above please speak to Kathryn Moody.
Transport: You need to arrange your own Transport for yourself, your boat and all your stuff. Please share with others if you can and sort out costs between you.
And you must practice fitting your roof rack/bars, and loading your boats BEFORE the day of the trip.
What to bring: Bring your own food and drink to cover you for the whole day....and a bit more. Do not RELY on buying food on the way to the boat house or on the way to the start, or during the trip, or at the end of the trip. Plus sun cream, hat, 1st aid, spare paddling clothes, spare dry clothes, spare warm clothes (in case you end up with a long wait on the bank for whatever reason), ......all to be carried in your boat with you, and kept dry and secure at all times.
If you also have safety and rescue equipment that you normally carry....pump/towrope/throwline/boat towline/etc please bring that as well.
All paddlers are initially responsible for their OWN safety and wellbeing. Do not rely on others to keep you safe.
We "take off" (start paddling) on the dot of 09:30, from the Canoe launch platform on the canal/cut close to Yalding Weir.
Sorry but we cannot not wait for late arrivals.
